How to Say It

Some of these words may look daunting! This list may help to decipher them and their pronunciations.

"PLAHNTS-eh-HI-el-koonsht"

Most people may recognize the word "heil" as "hail," as in hailing someone. In this case, it means "heal" or "hale," as in "healthy." An irony of Deitsch is that, if you were to look up "heil" in a Deitsch dictionary, you would end up with a form of the verb "to wail." However, the "heil" in the middle of this word retains the connotation of healing. The verb "to heal" in most Deitsch variants is "heele" ("HAY-leh"). The term bearing "heele" is Blanzeheelkunscht does exist in Northern variants and may, over time, become the primary term used here.

Blanzeheilkunscht

This blog is about herbalism from the Deitsch (Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania German) perspective. The term "Blanzesheilkunscht" ("plant therapeutics") is but one name for herbalism in the Deitsch language.

Other terms include, but are not limited to, the following:

Blanzeschwetzerei, Blanzegschwetz, Blanzeschwetze: "plant conversation" or "plant talking."

Blanzewissenschaft: "plants science"

The Deitsch have a longstanding tradition of herbal healing and plant utilization that has suffered from cultural suppression since World War I and has been impeded by medical institutions since the rise of modern medicine.
