Cloves for Toothache - Zaahweh

Recently I wrote an article about an herbal mouthwash for tooth repair. Today I'd like to talk about urgent some toothache (Deitsch: es Zaahweh or der Zaahschmatz) issues from the perspective of what has worked for a friend.

The Black Walnut (Juglans nigra; Deitsch: die Schwatzwalnuss or die Schwarzwalnuss) tincture cited in that post can help with a toothache, but, sometimes, a toothache resulting from an exposed nerve can cause excruciating pain. In these circumstances, one should go to a dentist immediately.

My friend had a dull ache in his tooth for a few days. Last night, though, it became severe enough that he could not sleep. He tried ibuprofen and Anbesol. The ibuprofen helped a bit at first, but subsequent doses did not help. The Anbesol helped a bit for a few minutes, but then the pain came right back. Eventually, he turned to Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum or Eugenia carophyllata; Deitsch: es Naegli or es Neggelche).

Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, which is native to the Maluku Islands. Cloves were among the earliest spices to be a trade commodity, appearing in Alexandria by 176 CE (see Chevallier, Andrew. Encyclopedia of herbal medicine, p. 99. New York: Dorling Kindersley, 2000). Thus, Cloves have been known in the West for many centuries.

Deitsch botanist Christopher Sauer described many uses for Cloves (see Weaver, William Woys. Sauer's herbal cures, p. 106. New York: Routledge, 2001.), and many of those uses will appear in future posts. Sauer also recorded numerous other herbs that can be used for toothache, and those will also be described in the future.

My friend took a cotton swab, dropped two drops of Cloves essential oil on it, and swabbed the oil directly on the offending tooth.

I will mention that I also said a Braucherei incantation, along with the appropriate hand gestures, over the affected area.

The Braucherei incantation was as follows:

Zaahweh un Maulfeil
Nenn ich wie der Dood
in seim Graab

Within ten minutes, my friend's pain had subsided to the point that he had fallen asleep and slept comfortably for a few hours until it was time for him to arise.

The efficacy of the incantation cannot be proven or claimed, though, because my friend finally was able to get to a dentist for appropriate treatment. However, he was pleased with the relief he got from the Cloves.

Disclaimer: This is a remedy that was used effectively by a friend and is related for the purpose of sharing a traditional Deitsch practice. This description is not intended to replace, nor does it replace, advice or treatment from a qualified medical professional. My friend still went to a licensed dentist. Clove oil is highly concentrated and should be handled very carefully according to the specifications on the producing company's bottles.
